AUSTRALIA Visa Procedure

After a student applies for the university and if s/he is fit for a university, the next process unfolds. The university offers a conditional offer and the student needs to accept it for further processing. The next step will be the student fulfilling the conditions and clearing the GS requirements to get the unconditional offer.

Without clearing these requirements the student will not receive the final offer. Let's know more about what GS is.

All applicants for a Student visa must show they are coming to Australia temporarily to gain a quality education. The Genuine Student (GS) requirement is not intended to exclude students who, after studying in Australia, develop skills Australia needs and then apply for permanent residence.

GS requirement is a must while completing your visa application. You need to include a statement of purpose in the application. GS statement should be 300 words in total. It needs to address your personal circumstances for undertaking your proposed study in Australia.

A student has to show funds for tuition fees and living expenses for one year. The revised living expenses from August 2023 are A$24,505 for a single person. In addition to this, the student needs to show funds for his tuition fees. A student has to take medical insurance (OSHC) for the duration of his/her stay.

After meeting these financial requirements and GS, the university will offer a final offer letter. The student must pay the tuition fees for the first semester to get an e-COE (Confirmation of Enrollment).

A GS interview will be done by the college to assess the genuine intentions of the student who wishes to come to Australia for higher education. In this interview, they will assess how well you know about

• Course you wish to study

• University

• Aspirations

• Previous study

• Gaps

• Employment

• Value of the course to your growth

• Economic ties with your home country

While usually there will be no visa interview, the consulate may ask to attend an interview if they need further clarification.

After giving the biometrics and photograph at AVAC (Australia Visa Application Centre) or ABCC (Australia Biometrics Collection Centre) you need to wait for the high commission's decision. After your visa application is accepted you are ready to fly to Australia.

When you arrive or depart Australia, there are things you need to know and things you need to do.

• All arriving and departing passengers must have a valid passport or travel document.

• Arriving passengers need to complete an Incoming Passenger Card. If you are not an Australian Citizen you must hold a valid visa when entering Australia.

• If you hold an eligible ePassport and are aged 16 years or over, you are eligible to use SmartGate when arriving at, or departing from, Australian airports.

• Border Force officers exercise questioning powers if required.

Now you have crossed and entered Australia. Sort your accommodation and plan your trip to the nearest date of the program. 

Join your university on the orientation day. International Student Orientation covers important immigration, employment, and cross-cultural sessions, as well as academic information specifically of interest to all international students beginning at Australian University. This program will give you the chance to learn important information for your studies, as well as to meet your new classmates. 

Don't forget to inform your university when you move to a new address. Changing courses or universities is a hectic task and needs approvals which is very tedious. Choose your university with utmost care.

• Eligible to work part-time for up to 48 hours in a fortnight.

Switch to skilled work visas once you get an employer who can sponsor you.

• A skilled nominated visa will let you become an Australian permanent resident (PR) if you meet the below requirements.

  • A substantive visa like Sub-class 491 or 494 for at least 3 years.

  • Submit an EOI (expression of Interest) and wait to be invited.

  • Be nominated by the state.

  • Have a suitable skills assessment.

  • Aged under 45 years.

  • Score 65 points or more on SkillSelect.

  • Have competency in English

  • Your occupation must be listed on eligible skilled occupations.

  • Meet health and character requirements.

  • Pay back your Australian debt.

  • Sign the Australian values statement.

  • Not had a visa canceled or previous application refused.
